HIDDEN FIGURES (2016)

This is one of those films where you sit there baffled and mortified that these backward attitudes existed in the same time as the fashions, the cars, the radio and television... It's also one of those films that you feel you've seen before. Like Forrest Gump. Or Apollo 13. It gives you goose bumps. It brings a tear to your eye. You're in safe solid hands. I kept waiting for Tom Hanks to show up.

And after the brutal no frills storytelling of Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight it is a welcome treat.

I know practically nothing about NASA or space and travel and had no idea about this part of history so it was a thoroughly good education. Like The Imitation Game this story needs to told and retold and retold again. It should be shown in schools. It’s cringey that Hollywood had to shoe-horn in the fictional scene of Kevin Costner smashing the ‘whites only’ sign in a brazen display of white saviour. But even this aspect needs to be taught in schools. The three leads are wonderful but, as she does in Moonlight, Janelle Monáe steals all her scenes.
