Get Out
GET OUT (2017)
I’ll preface this by saying I’m not a fan of Horror genre tropes. As soon as the victim does something no one in a million years would ever do, I’m out of the film. For example don’t escape the Murder House only to return for something arbitrary. Also I hate how the villain, a normal human, can develop super human strength and resilience. Not that these two things happen in Get Out, but similar frustrations occur.
But then it’s not really a horror. It is horrifying. It’s not a thriller, but it’s thrilling. And despite what the Golden Globes say it’s not a comedy, but it is funny. In fact the comic relief provided by the omnipresent and all-knowing best friend is very welcome.
It is so well cast it deserves awards for that alone. Daniel Kaluuya is effortlessly likeable and the horror he conveys in his unblinking eyes haunts you. A very welcome nomination for Best Actor. I thought Allison Williams was as vile as it gets in ‘Girls’. I had no idea.
There’s something so terrifying about the stillness of the villains. So quiet and slow. It’s excruciating.
I enjoyed Get Out at the time of watching but enjoyed it even more when reading up on it. Treat yourself to the trivia on IMDb. It’s like attending a fascinating lecture on the African American experience in film.
8 thumbs up!
