Arrival
ARRIVAL (2016)
Twelve strange egg shaped objects the size of London’s Gherkin have landed around Earth. The U.S military’s best men are stumped and so call on linguistic expert Amy Adams. She appears to be fighting demons of her own and the alien life form seem to relate.
I was expecting Aliens but got an emotional human story about communication, loss and discovery. No fighting, just listening. Particularly because Amy Adams rarely raises her voice above a whisper.
Directed by the excellent Sicario’s Denis Villeneuve this is a curious thriller with an inventive and refreshing new aesthetic to the space beings to boot. And after giving an equally brilliant and chilling performance in Nocturnal Animals it appears, frustratingly, that Amy Adams has cancelled herself out of the race for her overdue Best Actress win.
Watch this on a Saturday night for that proper ‘Movie Night’ feel.
