Moonlight

MOONLIGHT (2016)

My favourite film last year was Steve Jobs - a series of two/three-handers focusing on character development. It was focused and perfect. And Moonlight is similar.

It tells the story Chiron, in three stages of his developing years as he struggles with his sexuality in a brutal landscape. The acting in each chapter, from all of the cast, is exceptional; both sensitive and powerful. As is often the case I think one actor will win the award on behalf of the film; here it'll be Mahershala Ali. His nurturing warmth is palpable and I like him in House of Cards, so I'm happy. Ashton Sanders should've been nominated. He's so painfully awkward and defensive you feel everything. Naomie Harris is outstanding and if it wasn't for Viola she'd be taking home gold. But based on this performance she'll be back (and in greater numbers).

If you like watching plays, but in film form, this is for you.

8 thumbs up!
