Fences
FENCES (2016)
The problem with theatre is that it's fleeting. When Mel Brooks made the musical film version of The Producers he said it was to document the partnership of Broadway's Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
And that's the greatest thing about Fences. It captures and keeps Denzel Washington and Viola Davis’ Tony-winning work from the Broadway production. It's hard not to be biased as I'm a fan of Viola so I'm gunning for her to bag the Oscar, though she warrants a Lead Nom (she's such a fearless cryer).
Whereas Baz Lurhman went to town with his filmic creativity when he adapted Romeo&Juliet, It feels like Denzel set a camera on a tripod and filmed this play.
It's like you have the best seats in the house watching two greats. And that's no bad thing.
7 thumbs up!
