Women Talking
Women Talking (2022)
If ever a film did exactly what it says in the tin this is it! Based solely in a barn, the women of an isolated commune get together to very democratically decide their fate. Stay and fight their abusers or leave.
It doesn’t sound very enticing does it? It’s a simple premise but surprisingly profound. Ultimately what’s astounding is that it’s based on a true story from only a few years ago;
Writer/director Sarah Polley adapts Miriam Toew’s book about the real account of a group of women from a religious community being secretly drugged and sexually attacked in the night and then told that it’s down to supernatural activity. Completely staggering.
And though this is delivered serenely with the help of a green colour palette and soothing narration you’re left feeling quite anxious throughout.
There are some great performances especially when tempers flare. Particularly from The Crown’s Claire Foy. She excels with rage. While Rooney Mara helps ease tensions remaining zen throughout.
