SAVING MR BANKS (2013)

It’s rather fitting that I don’t remember the first time I watched this. But I do know it became an instant favourite. Talk about a hidden gem! This largely went under the radar upon release. It didn’t bother the awards season like it should have. Emma Thompson was robbed blind of a nomination. She already has two statues from the early 90s but it would’ve been nice to have her back on the red carpet. I wasn’t always a fan of hers and then of course she crumpled on the bed in Love, Actually listening to Joni Mitchell and I was hers forever.

Every actor gives a superb turn. From Thompson’s stubborn uptight matron in Hollywood, Tom Hanks’ paternal yet dominant Walt Disney to Colin Farrell’s charismatic chancer father who likes a tipple.

A split narrative tells the story of both the author of Mary Poppins, P.L Travers, being wooed by Disney to turn her books into the film alongside the story of her childhood in Australia. 1960s Los Angeles is a primary colour vision while turn of the century Queensland is a beautiful hot yellow haze.

Your soul goes on an absolute journey as we traverse timelines and countries. Enjoy the pure elation when the Sherman Brothers successfully demo “Let’s go fly a kite” to the obstinate Mrs Travers. Watch with joy as her jaw unclenches and her feet find freedom. Farrell kills you as he strives to provide for his family whilst battling his boozy demons. The integrity of your Kleenex box will be truly threatened by the night of the Mary Poppins premiere.

Let yourself go and give in to this pure beauty of a film. Initially released at Christmas it has become a recent staple of our family Christmas Day. After the feast has been picked to death and Pictionary packed away who can resist pressing play and indulging in a right good cry! I recommended you do the same.
