BLACKKKLANSMAN (2018)

Based on a the true story of undercover cop Ron Stallworth infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan in the 70s, Spike Lee’s film is stylish, stressful and depressing. But it’s an excellent film.

We had to watch ‘Mississippi Burning’ in school. I haven’t needed to watch it since as it left quite the impression. It was so hard to believe that this activity existed in a civilised world. Twenty years later and I’m still lost for words (this may be a short review!) so I’ll stick to the technicalities of it all.

You’re always in good hands with Spike Lee - ‘Inside Man’ is still a go-to Friday night film for me. His storytelling is fast paced yet considered. He finds humour in the haunting and he gets performances that feel improvised yet the actors say impossibly smart things for this to be true. Thanks to his pop, John David Washington has a lot to live up to. You can’t not hear Denzel in his voice, particularly when that voice plays a pivotal role. The solemn look in his eyes when he discovers what the targets are in the woodland shooting range is distressing and stays with you.

Adam Driver is his charming affable self. He gets himself in some palm-sweating situations. He probably doesn’t warrant an Oscar nom but I like it when a Star Wars alum gets one!

Watch this on a Wednesday night, probably when you don’t have any social plans afterwards. It’s a real horror film.
